Competition Content
-
In terms of performing means and tools, contestants can utilize various calligraphy styles and techniques, including but not limited to regular script (kaishu), cursive script (caoshu), running script (xingshu), seal script (zhuanshu), and semi-cursive script (lishu), as well as improvisational creation based on traditional norms. They can also make use of traditional calligraphy setups for performance, such as brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, or opt for digital calligraphy tools and electronic presentation effects (while ensuring the core of the work remains rooted in calligraphic artistry). Whether it's solo calligraphy, collaborative calligraphy pieces (e.g., combining different scripts in one work), or calligraphy integrated with other traditional art forms (e.g., matching calligraphy with painting), contestants are encouraged to create their works in any form, fully unleashing their personal strengths and creativity.

Entrants should submit their works in the form of high-quality images or video files. The images should ensure clear and undistorted details, while the video (if submitted) should clearly capture the entire creation process, including the calligrapher's brush movements, posture, and the evolution of the work on paper. If the performance features special calligraphy techniques, such as ink wash gradation, brush speed variation, or unique stroke dynamics, it is advisable to present these aspects comprehensively. The image format is limited to JPG, PNG, and the video format is limited to MP4, MOV. The file size should not exceed [100] MB (a suitable size limit can be set according to the actual situation).

Scoring Criteria
-
Calligraphy Composition and Layout: The overall calligraphy work is well-structured. The arrangement of characters, whether in solo, collaborative, or themed series works, is appropriate. The proportion of different elements such as main text, inscriptions, and seals is accurate, with no obvious imbalance in the layout. The flow of the work is logical, and the transitions between lines, paragraphs, or character groups are smooth (e.g., consistent spacing, harmonious alignment).
-
Ink and Brush Technique Application: The combination of ink tones and brush textures is harmonious, and the overall visual effect of the work has a rich layered texture. Appropriate calligraphic expression techniques are used according to the theme and emotions of the content (e.g., poems, proverbs), such as using ink gradation (from thick to light) to show changes in rhythm and brush stroke contrasts (e.g., sharp vs. mellow lines) to emphasize key characters or phrases. The transition of styles across different sections (e.g., from steady regular script to fluid running script) is natural and seamless, enhancing the overall visual experience.
-
Calligraphy Skills and Techniques: The calligrapher’s execution is natural and expressive. They have a good command of various calligraphic techniques, such as brush control (e.g., pressure variation, tip manipulation), stroke accuracy (e.g., proper starting and ending of lines), rhythm in writing (e.g., speed changes), and character structure (e.g., balanced proportions, coherent strokes). The execution of these techniques is smooth, demonstrating a high level of calligraphic proficiency. Whether it’s handling intricate seal script radicals, dynamic cursive script connections, or delicate semi-cursive stroke transitions, the calligrapher shows excellent control.
-
Artistic Appeal: The calligrapher has a deep understanding of the work’s theme and can fully integrate their emotions into the creation. The work is full of charm, capable of evoking strong aesthetic resonance in the viewer. Their mastery of traditional connotations (e.g., cultural context of the text) and personal style expression are also important aspects. The work leaves a lasting and profound impression, effectively conveying the intended artistic concept and cultural heritage through their calligraphic technique and interpretation.
