Competition Content

  • Participants can adopt diverse piano styles, including but not limited to classical, romantic, jazz, and original compositions. They may perform solo, in a duet, small ensemble, or collaborate with other instruments (violin, cello, etc.) to showcase personal strengths and creativity, with essential techniques like legato, staccato, arpeggios, and trills to be demonstrated—classical pieces require adhering to score markings, while contemporary works allow innovative approaches. For equipment, participants may use the competition’s tuned concert grand pianos or bring their own (meeting acoustic/size requirements); adjustable piano benches and metronomes (for practice/rehearsal) are also permitted to enhance performance comfort and tempo accuracy.

  • Participants must submit high-quality video files that clearly show the full performance, including hand positioning, finger dexterity, pedal usage, stage presence, and sufficient lighting for facial expressions/body language—special techniques (finger-crossing, rapid runs) should be visible/audible, and a brief intro (name, age, piece title) is required. Formats are limited to MP4/MOV, with file size not exceeding [500] MB (adjustable per actual needs), and participants should review videos to ensure top audio-visual quality for judging.

Scoring Criteria

  • Musical Composition and Structure: The overall structure of the piano piece is reasonable. Whether it is a solo, duet, small piano ensemble, or a collaborative performance of piano with other instruments (or backing tracks), the arrangement of each musical part (melody, accompaniment, bass line) is appropriate. The proportions of melody, harmony, rhythm, and the piano’s sound in relation to other elements (if any) are accurate, with no obvious issues of compositional imbalance. The progression of the music follows a logical order, and the transitions between different sections (such as from exposition to development in classical works, or from verse to chorus in contemporary pieces) are natural, smooth, and tightly connected.

  • Tone and Dynamics Expression: The tone of the piano (whether bright, warm, or mellow) paired with other instruments (or backing tracks) is harmonious, and the overall sound of the performance is rich in layers. Based on the theme and emotion of the piece, appropriate expressive techniques are employed. For example, shifts in emotion are conveyed through dynamic gradations (such as a crescendo from piano to forte, subtle changes in touch intensity), and key musical moments are emphasized through tone contrasts (like the clear treble register versus the deep bass register, the tonal difference between crisp staccato and smooth legato). The transition of tone between different sections or musical phrases is natural and smooth, enhancing the overall auditory experience.

  • Mastery of Performance Techniques and Abilities: The performer’s playing is natural and expressive. They demonstrate mastery of various piano techniques, including technical control abilities (such as stable hand positioning, accurate note hitting, balanced touch strength), application of special techniques (like trills, arpeggios, glissandos, pedal control), and ensemble coordination (for duets or groups). These techniques are applied skillfully and superbly, reflecting a high level of performance. Whether handling rapid melodic passages, complex chord progressions, rhythmic syncopations, or delicate dynamic variations, the performer maintains excellent control and precision.

  • Artistic Appeal and Emotional Resonance: The performer has a profound understanding of the piano piece’s theme and can fully integrate their own emotions and interpretations into the performance. The playing is engaging and expressive, capable of evoking strong emotional resonance from the audience—whether it is the grandeur and elegance in classical works, the tenderness and warmth in lyrical pieces, or the vitality and rhythm in jazz piano. Their stage presence (such as a confident posture, stable hand movements, and a sense of communication with the "audience" in recorded formats) and interpretation of the musical spirit are also important considerations. The performance leaves a deep and lasting impression, effectively conveying the artistic concepts and emotional core that the piece intends to express through skilled techniques and sincere expression.
